Restaurante Monterrey sits quietly on Calle Casto Plasencia in San Esteban de Pravia, offering a slice of authentic Asturian dining deeply connected to local rhythms. This full-service restaurant is the kind of place where meals take their time, encouraging diners to settle in and soak up the slow, coastal village atmosphere.

The menu leans heavily on fresh seafood and regional specialties, with standout dishes like zamburiñas (scallops), arroz con bogavante (lobster rice), and the hearty cachopo de cecina y queso de oveja (a local take on stuffed fried meat). You’ll also find classics such as pulpo con cachelos (octopus with potatoes) and chipirones a la plancha (grilled baby squid), which underscore the connection to the Cantabrian Sea. Homemade desserts like rice pudding and local cheese tarts round out the experience with simple, comforting finishes.

Visitors appreciate that the kitchen stays open later than many regional eateries, making it well-suited for those arriving after afternoon activities or long walks along the coast. The seating inside is straightforward but welcoming, with a relaxed vibe where locals and travelers mix, often lingering over sidra or a glass of wine while watching everyday village life move at its own unhurried pace.

For those on the Camino del Norte or travelers curious about the port’s industrial heritage, Monterrey offers a friendly stop to refuel with authentic flavors and attentive service. It’s a place where getting a table mid-afternoon for the menu del día is worth planning ahead, especially if you want to sample typical Asturian dishes without rushing.

Best time to visit: Early evening or during the extended dinner hours, when the kitchen is still open and the pace slows after the afternoon.

Who will enjoy it most: Lovers of traditional Asturian food, seafood enthusiasts, pilgrims, and anyone looking for a down-to-earth, local dining experience away from tourist traps.

Atmosphere: Unpretentious and communal, with a steady flow of locals and travelers alike who appreciate food that honors its regional roots and a setting where time feels a little slower.

This local bar is the heart of the village — the kind of place where time slows down and the food speaks for itself. The menu features simple, fresh, and flavorful dishes that feel both comforting and authentic. But what really makes this spot special is the atmosphere. It's the perfect place to sit back with a drink, enjoy a good meal, and watch the rhythm of local life unfold around you. Whether it's neighbors catching up or lively conversations at the bar, there's a real sense of community here that you won’t find in more touristy spots. A genuine slice of local culture — and well worth a visit.

Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. The kitchen stays open longer than most restaurants, so we were able to have dinner at 7 PM. They offer fresh fish and homemade desserts. The set menu for two, featuring traditional seaffod rice, is the star of the restaurant. I highly recommend this place!

At this taperia my camino friends and I had a really wonderful evening. For me, it was one of the best nights I had during my camino del norte. The food was delicious and the waiter and the cook were so friendly, we had lot's of fun with them. They even have a vegetarian pilgrims meal, that was really wonderful. It's worth it to go a longer way round here.

What a find! Looking for an early dinner (difficult in Spain) whilst passing through. We were interested in the industrial heritage of the port at San Esteban and discovered El Monterey. Wonderful authentic food with charming, friendly service. Excellent dining experience.

Food is really good, we went for the menu del día. It was great. Must be there before 3 for the menu. Probably getting there at 2 is a good idea with a table booked. I will go back there again. For me, I'd say it is the best place to eat typical food from the area. I lived in Cudillero.

Nice location with a view of the water in the small coastal industrial village of San Esteban. Lunch options are okay, a bit oily. Good coffee. We paid around €35 for two people for lunch with coffee.

Nice, friendly, sociale owner who made us feel at home. It seems to be the most lively bar restaurant in the village.
